Arsenio Hall to return to late night
"The Arsenio Hall Show" is coming back to TV this fall after almost 20 years since it last signed off. While
Hall says viewers can expect to see a different late-night show than the one he left behind in the 1990s, there's one thing he's pretty sure will follow him wherever he goes: the dog-pound chant. "I've got a feeling when I walk out this time, they'll be doing that," Hall told Today.com.
The raised fist "Woo! Woo! Woo!" chant may have helped Hall become one of the biggest names in late night during the '90s, but despite his former success, he told reporters Friday he's basically starting over with his show. Hall, who interviewed everyone from Madonna to Snoop Dog to then presidential hopeful Bill Clinton during his nearly five-seasion run, said he left the late-night scene 19 years ago to "seek some balance in my life as a man... and do some soul searching," but is excited to bring a new kind of show to television. "I'm different, so my show must be different," he said.
He does, however, plan to bring back some of his old show's biggest guests, including Mariah Carey, who made her very first television appearance on Hall's program in September 1990. She performed her single, "Vision of Love", but Hall said that due to her then-manager Tommy Mottola, he got cheated out of interviewing her.
"I remember saying, 'Tommy I want to ask Mariah this tonight.' And I would get a message back, 'Not only can you not ask her that, but you're not interviewing her tonight'," Hall said. "I never had the interview with Mariah that I always wanted to have. And now it's even better because it's been 20 years and she's still relevant and I'm proud of that. So I look forward to doing the interview I never got to do, the uncontrolled one where I get to sit with her and really kick it."

Butler drama trumps Kick-Ass 2 in US cinemas
Lee Daniels' The Butler, a star-studded drama inspired by an African-American who served as a White
House butler to eight presidents, was the top draw at North American cinemas this weekend. The film, which stars Forest Whitaker, took an estimated $25m (£16m) in the US and Canada between Friday and Sunday. "We did not expect it to do this well," said a spokesman for its distributor.
In contrast, comic book sequel Kick-Ass 2 could only manage fourth place with a first weekend haul of $13.5m (£8.6m). That was less than the $19.8m (£12.6m) its predecessor made in its first weekend in the US and Canada in April 2010. Kick-Ass 2's takings were swelled, however, by the $6.3m (£4m) it made in ticket sales outside North America.
According to The Weinstein Company's Erik Lomis, the involvement of Oprah Winfrey was "a significant factor" in The Butler's success. "Her publicity machine really kicked into high gear," he said of the talk show queen, whose appearance as Whitaker's wife marks her first starring role since 1998's Beloved. "An Oprah Winfrey endorsement virtually guarantees you a hit," agreed Paul Dergarabedian of box office analysts Hollywood.com.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film appealed strongly to black church-goers, a demographic specifically courted in its promotional materials. Starring Whitaker as the fictional manservant Cecil Gaines, Lee Daniels' The Butler co-stars Robin Williams, John Cusack, Mariah Carey and Jane Fonda.
The film's slightly tortuous nomenclature came about after the Weinstein Company lost a legal battle with Warner Brothers over the right to use the title The Butler.
Warner Bros comedy We're the Millers held onto second place in this week's chart, making $17.8m (£11.4m) in its second week in US and Canadian cinemas. Last week's top film, Matt Damon's sci-fi thriller Elysium, dropped to third place after making an estimated $13.6m (£8.7m) between Friday and Sunday.
Jobs, starring Ashton Kutcher as the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, was the third new entry in this week's Top 10, claiming seventh place with a first weekend tally of $6.7m (£4.3m). That was almost twice as much made by Paranoia, a corporate espionage thriller starring Gary Oldman and Harrison Ford that made its debut in 13th spot with a $3.5m (£2.2m) haul.

Mariah diverts attention away from her sling
She's been sporting a rather fetching sling since dislocating her shoulder while shooting a new music video
last month. But Mariah Carey offered a welcome distraction from her arm accessory as she strutted her stuff in a plunging minidress while attending a press conference for her latest movie, The Butler, at New York's exclusive Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Monday afternoon.
Showing off her toned and tanned pins and ample cleavage in the daring LBD, the 43-year-old singer ensured all eyes were well and truly on her showstopping curves as she arrived at the event. Featuring unusual lace sleeves, the striking dress was a sexy, yet sophisticated, look for the star, who was joining the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Lenny Kravitz and James Marsden at the event.
The mother-of-two teamed her chic LBD with a pair of mesh-detail stilettos by Christian Louboutin, while wearing her honey blonde locks swept to the side in a cascade of tumbling curls. Posting a "selfie" on her Twitter and Instagram pages before heading out for the day, she said: "On my way to see Lee Daniels at the press conference for The Butler."
The Hero hitmaker sustained her dislocated shoulder last month during a shoot for a remix of her track Beautiful, directed by her husband Nick Cannon, when she slipped in high heels from a raised platform. Nick told Extra: "It is a severe injury, she still has nerve damage, she can't really move her arm right now. She can't really hold anything yet, that's going to take a while... lots of physical therapy."
Directed by Lee Daniels, The Butler is produced by Harvey Weinstein and stars chat show host Oprah Winfrey as the female lead. The film is based on a book written by Eugene Allen, an African American butler who worked in the White House during eight presidencies, including that of Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Reagan and Nixon.
Academy Award-winner Forrest Whitaker takes on the titular role alongside the likes of Winfrey, Jane Fonda, Alan Rickman, Robin Williams, James Marsden and John Cusack. Other noteworthy cast members include Vanessa Redgrave, Alex Pettyfer and Lenny Kravitz.
