TV picks for March 5: "American Idol" goes live

Let the games begin. If Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj truly despise each other, it's going to start getting harder to hide. "American Idol" finally goes live, which makes it almost impossible to edit out any temper tantrums, walkouts or diva moments. Russ Meyer couldn't have come up with a better scenario, with 10 males competing tomorrow night, and 10 females going at it Wednesday. Results will air Thursday.

Lambs across the world: As part of our commitment in supporting our Mariah Carey, @TrendingMariah has come up with an initiative that is sure to help. Come March 8, the release date of the "Oz The Great And Powerful" and our very own "Almost Home" directed by the reknowned David Lachapelle, lambs all over the globe can join in for our "Almost Home Appreciation Day."

With the likes of Mariah Daily, Mariah Carey Connection, Mariah Carey Australia, Global Mariah Fans, E Lambily, Lovelovejackjapan, MCGeneration, Mariah Carey France, Mariah Carey Singapore, Mariah Universe Phillipines, Mariah Fans SA, The Mariah Network Spain, Glittering Mariah Italy and Heroes Of Mariah all supporting the mission, our aim will be to trend the video along with tagging @disney and linking the movie which will provide us with another niche.

The relevant links and the time of the event will be issued out via @TrendingMariah and all the affiliated sites.

We urge the lambily to use the cover pic to promote the event via social media.

So set March 8 in your calenders lambs! This event is bound to make Mariah proud!

* The commencement time of the event will be dependent on a) When we have the relevant links and b) choosing the best time that will suit the lambs around the world.

Mariah to Perform "Almost Home" on Idol

Mariah Carey was chosen to perform the song "Almost Home" for the 'Oz the Great and Powerful' soundtrack, and her performance of it on American Idol is only one of the ways Disney is promoting the new film. Mariah Carey is currently serving as a judge on the Fox reality juggernaut American Idol.

Television promotions for the film have been hard to miss. Disney ran a pricey commercial during the CBS telecast of the Super Bowl. It also enlisted Mariah Carey to sing a song from the film on Fox singing contest American Idol, according to producer Joe Roth.

The high-flying, and headline-grabbing, entrance last month was the signature event of a Disney marketing blitz on major TV broadcasts, social media and at Disney parks to stoke interest in "Oz," a $200 million production that is its first release of an expensive 2013 film slate. It debuts in theaters March 8.

Mariah Talks New Album in Billboard's Spring Review

Be sure to pick up Billboard's March 9, 2013 issue for an exclusive interview with Mariah where she discusses her new album, tentatively scheduled to come out in May 2013.

The singer says her new album will have a 'lot more raw ballads than people might expect.'

"It's a lot to juggle, but I'm handling it," Mariah Carey says while driving to an evening studio session in Las Vegas for her new album. In town for the Vegas Week segment of "American Idol," the first-year judge was on her way to meet up with producers Jermaine Dupri and Bryan-Michael Cox after having put dem babies to bed. "It's about making sure I have tons of good music, because at the end of the day, that's the most important thing," says Carey, who had worked with the pair ("We have our own chemistry," she adds) until 6 a.m. that morning from the night before. She's also enlisted producers Big Jim Wright, Hit-Boy, The-Dream and Rodney Jerkins for tracks on the set.

Declining to reveal the album's title, she does allow that there are a "lot more raw ballads than people might expect." There are also uptempo and signature-type songs that represent her different facets as an artist. "Wherever we go with this project, I've tried to keep the soul and heart in it," she says, "with me obviously as the through-line." According to Dupri, "One particular song is definitely going to be a huge fan favorite, in my opinion."

Carey's last non-holiday studio album, 2009's "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel," debuted and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and sparked the hit "Obsessed." She's excited about collaborations with her No. 1 "Honey" cohort Q-Tip and DJ Cassidy this time around. The singer didn't specify if her collaboration with Q-Tip and DJ Cassidy would be for the new album.

'American Idol' on the Charts: Mariah Carey's New Single Takes Off (To See the Wizard)

"Almost Home," from the "Oz" soundtrack, debuts on two R&B surveys. Plus: Phillip Phillips ups his total of No. 1s, and Fantasia is "Greatest Gainer.

HERE COMES THE JUDGE: Even though the show has been on the air for 12 seasons, it’s still a rare event for an American Idol judge to have a single on the Billboard charts as an artist during their tenure on the series. Paula Abdul did it twice, first in 2008 with “Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow” and again in 2009 with “I’m Just Here for the Music.” Jennifer Lopez had four singles chart in 2011-12, starting with “On the Floor.” Her fellow judge Steven Tyler charted in 2011 with his solo single “(It) Feels So Good.”

This week, this elite list adds another name. Mariah Carey charts for the first time since she became a judge on Idol. Her soundtrack single from the forthcoming Oz the Great and Powerful makes four debuts. “Almost Home” is a new entry at No. 18 on R&B Songs and bows at No. 9 on the R&B Digital Songs chart. This is Carey’s first appearance on both charts -- no surprise, since both are fairly new in the pantheon of charts compiled every week by Billboard. "Almost Home" is also new at No. 1 on Bubbling Under Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and No. 29 on R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs.

Carey has one of the most impressive chart histories of the last quarter-century (she made her debut in 1990), just as Abdul, Tyler and Lopez had a long list of hits prior to appearing on Idol, but being on the show cannot be a hindrance to continued chart success. Look for “Almost Home” to debut on more Billboard charts next week.
ON THE ‘HOME’ FRONT: The story of Phillip Phillips’ “Home” does not have an ending yet. The single debuts at No. 1 on the Adult Top 40 Recurrents chart this week. It is the 10th chart to lift the season 11’s winner coronation song to first place, following Rock Digital Songs, Hot Digital Songs, Hot Digital Tracks, Triple A, Triple A Audience, Adult Top 40, Adult Contemporary, Adult Contemporary Audience and Mainstream Top 40 Recurrents. Add in Phillips’ one week at No. 1 with his album The World from the Side of the Moon on Top Rock Albums, and he now has 11 Billboard No. 1s to his credit.

While “Home” continues to build, the follow-up is also moving in the right direction. “Gone, Gone, Gone” breaks into the top 20 of the Rock Songs chart, where it is up 26-20.
Trivia note: you only need six letters (E, G, H, M, N and O) to spell the titles of Phillips’ first two singles.
BITS AND PIECES: Fantasia’s “Lose to Win” holds at No. 11 with a bullet on the Adult R&B chart and is named that tally’s “Greatest Gainer,” meaning it has the biggest percentage gain in airplay of any song on the list. The single also leaps 47-38 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay ... “Battle Scars” by Lupe Fiasco and Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian is a top 20 hit on Rap Songs (up 22-19) and R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs (up 20-15). On the Hot 100, “Battle Scars” improves 86-77 ... Kelly Clarkson’s “Catch My Breath” has a sales bump this week, resulting in a 36-29 rise on the Hot Digital Songs chart ... Colton Dixon’s “You Are” makes the same 16-15 move on both Christian Songs and Christian Adult Contemporary ... Mandisa’s “Stronger” re-enters the Christian Digital Songs chart at No. 3, while the follow-up, “Good Morning” with featured artist tobyMac, resurges 23-15 ... Jason Castro’s “Only a Mountain” makes a giant 44-19 leap on Top Christian Albums.
