Handling a problem like Mariah Carey
Mariah Carey arrived in Sydney last night, hoping her long-awaited concert here will run more smoothly than her Gold Coast opener. Carey had sound system problems at Tuesday night's gig at the Gold Coast Convention Centre. Arriving on stage just after 10pm after what felt like an endless series of warm-up acts, the superstar appeared to struggle through the early phase of the show after opening with Can't Take That Away from her 1999 Rainbow album.
Tottering across the stage and constantly adjusting her dress and hair, the newly christened American Idol judge frequently disappeared from the stage for what seemed to be "rest breaks" and kept fans waiting between songs, sometimes appearing out of breath. Twice the 42-year-old pop diva - whose visit to the Coast was co-ordinated by Jupiters Casino - performed while seated on a chaise longue.
Sound problems provided the night's backdrop as Carey complained openly of not being able to hear through her earpiece, saying it was distorted. "There's like 200 of you, can one of you just fix the ear thing," she called to her crew, adding: "I hope I'm not asking for the moon and the stars ... there's a lot of sound problems going on here. I don't know if it's me or you, or something in the air, but can we fix it?"
And just when Confidential thought the night couldn't get more peculiar, Carey announced she was to welcome two "special visitors" as she and husband Nick Cannon brought their 18-month-old twins, Morroccan (whom she referred to as Rocky) and Monroe, on stage. While many of the 4500 fans cheered their cameo, some questioned if, at just before 11pm and in front of a boisterous crowd, such a gesture was appropriate.
Carey plays at Allphones Arena in Sydney tonight.

Exclusive: Jermaine Dupri & Bryan-Michael Cox Have Ten Songs Recorded For New Mariah Carey Album
In addition to being a part of the new season of American Idol as a judge, Mariah Carey has been in the studio working on her thirteenth album which will serve as the follow up to “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel” which came out in 2009. There has not been a lot of news about the sound or direction of the album, but it appears there will be some familiar faces on there.
In an interview with producer Bryan-Michael Cox, who co-produced her lead single “Triumphant (Get ‘Em)”, YouKnowIGotSoul exclusively learned some details on the project.
“We did like ten songs. I don’t know how many songs are going to stick, but Mariah is like our sister. We love her and she calls. She always calls and a lot of artists don’t call. Mariah is one that consistently is like “If we’ve worked before, we can work again.” I love Mariah for that because she’s a true friend. We did a bunch of songs and I think four or five may stick. We’re excited about it.”
Hitmakers Jermaine Dupri and Bryan-Michael Cox, of course, have played a big role in Mariah Carey’s recent comeback producing hits such as “We Belong Together”, “Shake It Off” and “Don’t Forget About Us”. Although details about the album and its release date are unclear at this point, it is safe to assume that a new single should be on the way as the new season of American Idol is set to air January 16th.

Mariah shines on the Gold Coast
Powerhouse performer Mariah Carey didn't disappoint her massive loyal fan base at her first Australian concert on Tuesday night at The Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre by opening her anticipated show with her theme song Can't Take That Away.
The diva, who is here for a series of three concerts, opened her performance in a figure hugging white spangly mini-dress and immediately set the tone with her multi-octave voice. "Happy New Year," she yelled to the adoring 4502 pumped concert goers - who she affectionately calls her "lambs".
She recalled an earlier visit to Australia before singing her hit song Butterfly on a white chaise lounge. "I had the best time in my life here the last time I was here, the dolphins even the Vegemite I had the best time it was like a freeing time in my life - I'm not just saying that."
With her trademark flamboyance she brought her two children Moroccan and Monroe (dressed in a matching tutu) onto the stage with husband Nick Cannon and made them say "hi" in the microphone. "It's bed time night night - I love you, kiss mummy," she said trying to deal with minor sound difficulties in the newly built theatre.
The audience, including local celebrities Sophie Monk and Ruby Rose, were lucky enough to secure tickets which had sold out in minutes upon release. "Everything that happened last year that wasn't exactly stellar - this year is going to be a long slow wonder!" she said. "What we need to do this year - for anything you don't want to remember from the last year - listen to these tracks to shake it off," she said as she broke into Shake It Off from her album The Emancipation of Mimi.
Here with her family, Carey arrived on The Gold Coast on Friday night on a private jet from Aspen, and has been staying in the penthouse suite of the filled-to -capacity Jupiters Hotel and Casino. Since arriving, the American Idol judge has been spotted enjoying Broadbeach with her family on one of Bruce Nicholl's yachts as well as partaking in a beachside workout with her husband and trainer.
"G'day Gold Coast! So excited to be back in Australia, I can't wait to see you all at the shows," she tweeted on arrival. On Saturday night the couple tucked their twins in bed and enjoyed a dinner at the Sea Temple's Seaduction Restaurant in Broadbeach with Fellow American Idol judge and her manager Randy Jackson, where she is reported to have dined on grade nine Wagyu beef prepared by executive chef Steve Szabo.
The singer is reported to have taken such a shine to the glittery strip on The Gold Coast, where she also plans on taking a swim with the dolphins at Sea World, that she is leaving Roe and Roc as they are affectionately called here with minders while she performs her Sydney concert on January 3rd and Melbourne date on the 5th.
Her world famous reputation appears in her backstage rider which stipulates two dozen white roses and vanilla-scented aromatherapy candles as well as a room temperature of exactly 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The list of demands is also reported to include Cristal champagne, a box of bendy straws and one special attendant to dispose of used chewing gum, tea service for eight people and two air purifier - and to make sure she only sees herself in the best light, no harsh lighting.Mind you, Jupiters have it easy - if rumours of a reported London concert demand list are to be believed. Apparently Carey demanded a Rolls Royce Phantom, a pink carpet, a pink podium, confetti shaped as butterflies and 80 security guards several years ago. At the same concert she also asked for 20 white kittens and 100 doves - the request was turned down.
But there were no such antics this week with the singer and her entourage nothing short of "lovely" according to insiders and staff dealing with the superstar. The happy family have been out and about relaxed and posing with fans, although the singer did not make time for local media as planned ahead of her first gig, opting so stay in her suite. Her dancers were, however, been spotted out and about enjoying the pool side facilities and local fauna.
The singer has had a controversial year being embroiled in a battle with her fellow Idol judge Nicky Minaj but showed no tensions on Tuesday night. The opening acts for the show was husband Cannon and Australian singer, Anthony Callea, who has now performed with the holy triumvirate of divas - having opened for both Celine Dion and the late Whitney Houston.
"It's the diva trifecta" he said ahead of his performance on Tuesday - when he flew up with partner Tim Campbell. "I met Whitney, I met Celine - to meet Mariah? Oh my God, I will be hoping and praying and everything in between."

Pure Gold Carey Wows The Coast
Mariah Carey put the “gold” into Gold Coast last night with a 24-carat performance – her first full-length concert since June last year.
The “songbird supreme” delivered the goods – from costume changes to dancers, purring, old-pro banter and circus-feat high notes- at the long sold-out show presented by Jupiters at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Unfortunately sound problems saw the show get a less-than-perfect start.
“There’s a lot of difficult sound problems going on here,” Carey said.
“I don’t know if it’s just me or if it’s just you, or if it’s something in the air, but can we fix it,” she said.
It is a shame she wasn’t playing Jupiters Theatre.
A capacity crowd of more than 4500 went nuts the moment the sultry American diva, resplendent in killer heels and a figure-hugging silver embroidered mini-dress, backed by a four-piece band, three vocalists and six male dancers, opened with Can’t Take That Away, also known as Mariah’s Theme, from her seventh studio album, 1999′s Rainbow.
Half an hour into the set, husband Nick Cannon brought Carey’s 18-month-old twins Monroe and Moroccan on stage to meet the crowd.
The “lambs” – Carey’s term for her loyal fanbase, just as Lady Gaga calls her followers “little monsters” – had been waiting since 1998′s Butterfly world tour to see the singer on Aussie soil.
Carey, 42, mixed things up with old-school hits such as My All, Always Be My Baby, Hero and Make It Happen alongside more recent showstoppers such as 2009′s Obsessed (said to be about Eminem) and the track that saw her pass Elvis as the singer with the most No. 1s in US history, 2008 hit Touch My Body (complete with finger snaps).
Her five-octave range was given a workout on disco-flavoured favourite Emotions, from her 1991 album of the same name, while her husky alto remains intact.
The singer’s singer was in her element on the revealing Close My Eyes, a song she rates as one of her favourites.
After 22 years in the spotlight – and with album sales of more than 200 million and five Grammys, 17 World Music Awards and 31 Billboard Awards to her credit – the mother of toddler twins Monroe and Moroccan is a consumate pro in the tradition of the world’s greatest performers.
Other gems in last night’s set included We Belong Together and the standout Shake It Off, from 2005′s The Emancipation of Mimi album, written after Carey split with first husband Tommy Mottola.
The show climaxed with the Carey-penned festive megahit All I Want For Christmas.
Make a note, all fans want this year is Mariah
Mariah Carey fans hyperventilated, cried and were left speechless when they found out the pop singer was coming to the Gold Coast.
Hollywood celebrity Sophie Monk, Titans players Nate Myles and Greg Bird, Bronco Scott Prince and even Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek were among the crowd.
Fans, many who have followed the 42-year old since her debut hit Vision of Love 22 years ago, sported handmade outfits proclaiming their love for Carey and could barely contain their excitement as they flooded into the venue. Fanatical fans Karlie Ilsley, Brooke Harris and Eliza Blackburn travelled from the Sunshine Coast and spent their New Year’s Eve making “I Love MC” t-shirts.
“She’s been our idol since childhood,” Ms. Harris said.
“I hyperventilated when I heard she was touring here and then we drank champagne to calm down because we didn’t think we’d get a ticket.
We didn’t do anything for New Year’s Eve – this is our big event.”
Megan Heymer, 26, drove six hours from Gladstone to meet her Brisbane-based sister Nicole Hides, 28, before they took a limo to the Coast for the show.
They remember growing up singing in front of the mirror with a fan blowing while doing Carey’s famous hand movements and then spending every festive season singing along to her famous Christmas album.
“My husband told me she was touring here and I cried then rang my sister and told her to come down – she was speechless,” Hides said.

Time-travelling Mariah Carey keeps ahead of the pack
Being a diva, it's only natural Mariah Carey wants to get in on the act first. And indeed that was the case as the U.S. star saw in 2013 in Australia - one of the first places to have celebrated the New Year due to time difference.
Mariah, who just enjoyed a winter break in Aspen, tweeted a snap of herself with husband Nick Cannon, who had a glass of champagne in hand, with the accompanying tweet: "Happy New Year from Australia!" The American Idol judge was clad in a red dress with a silver headband as she partied away.
Carey is believed to have celebrated in Queensland, where she was spotted just days before with Nick and their 20-month-old twins Moroccan and Monroe. The foursome enjoyed a trip around the Great Barrier Reef, with Mariah spotted tottering around in high heels as she walked the plank to the yacht.
Other celebs tweeting from Down Under included Keith Urban, who celebrated 2013 an hour earlier in Sydney, New South Wales, which is an hour ahead of Queensland. Keith was there with wife Nicole Kidman while former Spice Girl also enjoyed partying with her family in Oz, sharing a snap from Sydney. She wrote the accompanying messsage: "Happy new year yippee Sydney fireworks da bomb. Love our family and goodbye 2012 hello 2013."
Carey's family flew by private jet from their winter vacation getaway in Aspen, Colorado to sunny Queensland on Friday. They plan on remaining at this wondrous spot through the New Year before Mariah performs the first show of the Australia leg of her tour at the Gold Coast on January 1.
They will then head to Sydney for a concert on January 3 before wrapping things up in Melbourne on January 5. Nick will have something to do besides minding the children, as he will be performing DJ sets before each of Mariah's performances.

Mariah Carey's 'All I Want for Christmas' Re-Enters, Finally Hits Top 40 On Hot 100
Eighteen years after its release, Mariah Carey's** "All I Want for Christmas Is You" is a top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 at last.
With airplay and sales for holiday hits increasing, the track, from Carey's 1994 album "Merry Christmas," re-enters the chart at No. 29, a new peak position. "Christmas" had logged one prior frame on the chart, reaching No. 83 the week of Jan. 8, 2000. It didn't reach the Hot 100 upon its original release, as it was not available as a commercial single in 1994; per chart rules at the time, such tracks were not eligible to appear on the Hot 100. The carol did, however, rise to No. 12 on the Radio Songs chart the week of Jan. 7, 1995 (the highest rank for a holiday song in the chart's 22-year history).
How does an 18-year-old song show on the Hot 100 alongside current hits (including those by Justin Bieber**, who was not yet a year-old in late 1994)? Per current rules, any title, regardless of age, is eligible for the chart if it ranks in the top 50. Hot 100 rules changed at the beginning of the 2012 chart year to include titles of any era should they place in the list's top half; tracks by Whitney Houston benefited from the revision following her February passing, with, most noticeably, her 1992-93 Hot 100 No. 1 "I Will Always Love You" returning and soaring to No. 3 in March.
Two other versions of Carey's modern-day Christmas classic charted on the Hot 100 before the original's return this week, both last year. Bieber's take (subtitled "Superfestive!"), with Carey, ranked at No. 86 the week of Nov. 19, 2011, and Michael Buble's** ballad interpretation made a cameo at No. 99 six weeks later (amid a five-week reign on the Adult Contemporary chart).
Holiday Charts: Songs** | ALBUMS | AIRPLAY
Carey's original "Christmas" returns to the Hot 100 with digital sales of 69,000 (up 79%), according to Nielsen SoundScan. It bounds 37-19 on Digital Songs and leads Holiday Digital Songs for a fourth consecutive week. (The song has sold 2.3 million download to date). On Holiday Airplay, "Christmas" receives Greatest Gainer honors, lifting 7-5 with 26 million in audience (up 17%), according to Nielsen BDS. It re-enters Radio Songs at No. 48. "Christmas" tops the Holiday Songs chart, which measures sales, airplay and streaming, for a third week in a row.
Aiding the song's momentum, Carey appeared on NBC's "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" on Dec. 4, performing a merry version of the song with Fallon and the show's house band the Roots on miniature instruments (including xylophone, bongos and wood blocks). A chorus of children added background vocals. The clip has racked 7 million YouTube views since its posting.
CLICK HERE TO PLAY THE VIDEO ON YOUTUBE.
Upon her return, Carey claims her 34th top 40 hit on the Hot 100 (and first since "Obsessed" climbed to No. 7 in 2009). She breaks a tie with Connie Francis and Rihanna** (each with 33) for the fourth-most top 40 Hot 100 entries among women. Madonna** leads all female soloists with 49 top 40 hits, followed by Aretha Franklin** (43) and Taylor Swift** (39). Elvis Presley** leads all acts with 80 top 40 Hot 100 entries (not counting his numerous hits that predate the chart's Aug. 4, 1958, launch).
Billboard.com's entire menu of charts, including the Hot 100, Digital Songs, Radio Songs and Holiday Songs, will refresh tomorrow (Dec. 13).

Mariah Carey smiles as she goes Christmas shopping
Mariah Carey loves Christmas! Not only is the artist willing to share her joy by singing about the holiday, it appears she loves going Christmas shopping too. The entertainer went out to find some perfect gifts for the family on Sunday and she even smiled. The artist even shared a picture of her grinning as she got ready to go out to shop for presents.
"Getting ready for some Christmas shopping! Christmas time is in the air," tweeted Mariah Carey from her official Twitter account on Sunday. While Mariah Carey definitely doesn't have the worries of finding a parking spot at the mall or even dealing with the crowds as she arrives to pick out her favorite gifts, she still has plenty to do.
Readying for the holidays, even for the stars, takes a while to make sure the holiday experience is perfect. No doubt Mariah Carey will be smiling all holiday season as she always has shared with her fans how much she loves the holiday season.

Barbara Walters Names 10 Most Fascinating People
No confirmation yet but it looks like Mariah's interview recorded over the weekend with Barbra Walters may be for her "10 Most Fascinating People" special.
According to ABC News, which announced the selections last Tuesday, Walters has so far named actor Ben Affleck, British boy band sensation One Direction, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, Olympic gymnast and gold medalist Gabby Douglas, “Family Guy” creator and 2013 Oscars host Seth MacFarlane and EL James, author of Fifty Shades of Grey.
The eclectic mix, and three more as-yet-unnamed selections, will be interviewed as part of Walters‘ 20th annual special
“Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of the Year.” The 90-minute ABC program will air on Wednesday, December 12 at 9:30 p.m.
The number one most fascinating person of the year will be announced on the program.
Walters has chosen a wide range of personalities for the honor over the last 20 years. Last year she chose late tech guru and former Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Other standouts from years past include, Hamptons heiress Paris Hilton, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, Camilla Park Bowles, Laura Bush, General Tommy Franks, Colin Powell, Hamptons visitor and former president Bill Clinton, Nelson Mandela and Dan Rattiner.

Mariah Carey-led Holiday Songs chart returns
As the weather outside gets frightful (or at least the lines at the mall...), the Holiday Songs chart makes its annual return to Billboard.com. Like the Billboard Hot 100, but solely for yuletide tracks (of all eras), Holiday Songs ranks the most popular seasonal songs, according to all-format audience impressions measured by Nielsen BDS, sales data compiled by Nielsen SoundScan and streaming activity data from online music sources tracked by BDS.
Mariah Carey's 1994 classic "All I Want for Christmas Is You" tops the inaugural chart this season. (The carol led the list for four of the five weeks in which the tally was tabulated a year ago.) "Christmas" logged 20 million in radio audience in the current chart's tracking week, ranking at No. 6 on the Holiday Airplay ranking. It rules the Holiday Digital Songs chart with 27,000 downloads sold (up 112%).
While the overall chart points for "Christmas" leave it shy of the Hot 100's top 50 this week, should the song accrue enough points in upcoming weeks to rank in the Hot 100's upper half, it, or any holiday title regardless of age that reaches such a points level, would be eligible to rank on the Hot 100. Hot 100 rules were adjusted at the beginning of the 2012 chart year to include all titles regardless of age should they rank in the top 50; tracks by Whitney Houston benefitted from the adjustment following her February passing, with, most noticeably, her 1992-93 Hot 100 No. 1 "I Will Always Love You" returning and soaring to No. 3 in March.
Given their many years of serving as soundtracks to holiday cheer, several decades-old favorites populate the latest Holiday Songs top 10. Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" decorates the list at No. 2, followed by Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas to You)" (No. 3), Bobby Helms' "Jingle Bell Rock" (No. 4) and Burl Ives' "A Holly Jolly Christmas" (No. 5). Ives' chestnut tops Holiday Airplay with 23 million in listenership.
Trans-Siberian Orchestra's relatively newer "Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24)", released in 1996, places at No. 6 on Holiday Songs, trailed by Andy Williams' "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" (No. 7), Jose Feliciano's "Feliz Navidad" (No. 8), Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" (No. 9) and Wham!'s "Last Christmas" (No. 10).
A sprinkling of songs released in the 2000s appear on Holiday Songs, led by Michael Buble's "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" at No. 11. Holiday Songs, along with all charts, will update each Thursday on Billboard.com throughout the holiday season.

Mariah's Glitter co-star Padma Lakshmi became a big fan
Mariah Carey's film flop Glitter has one celebrity fan - model-turned-Tv personality Padma Lakshmi, who starred alongside the pop superstar in the movie. Lakshmi made her movie debut in the much-maligned 2001 film but admits it was a fun experience and even the bad reviews didn't change that.
And it turned Lakshmi into a huge Mariah Carey fan. She explains, "Nobody can sing the way she does. Watching her close up is like swimming alongside (Olympian) Michael Phelps at the Olympics. Girl's got some lungs."

Mariah and the meaning of Christmas
You might think that Christmas is about the birth of Jesus Christ or if you're going to hell, you might think it's about love, or giving, or family. For us, Christmas is about excessive chocolate eating and admiring Mariah Carey's luscious orbs, which were on full display at New York City's Rockefeller Center's annual tree lighting ceremony (produced by Liz Lemon).
Wearing a low-cut, satin embellished number and some soaring silver peep toes, Carey belted out her 1994 holiday hit "All I Want For Christmas Is You", to which our founding editor naturally replied, "signed, sealed, delivered I'm... errr, married". "Dammit," he added.
Carey, 40, has been all about showing off her assets this year, including this rather revealing outfit back in May. Anyway, there's clearly no time like the present to get into Mimi's cleavage, by which of course we mean "the holiday spirit". Boy-oy-oy-yoing! Merry Christmas to all!

Mariah Carey flaunts her cleavage
Mariah Carey shows off her cracking curves as she turns on the Christmas lights in New York. The curvaceous diva flaunted her full-on cleavage in a low-cut red satin-embellished dress. She teamed the festive frock with skyscraping silver peeptoe platforms and long red gloves.
Mariah, 42, took to the stage at New York City's Rockefeller centre for the annual tree lighting ceremony. She was joined on stage by a jolly looking santa as she belted out her holiday anthem All I Want For Christmas Is You to a crowd of waiting fans.
The song is a longstanding favourite at this time of year, remaining popular with fans across the world 18-years on from its original release on November 1 1994. It has since had global sales of over 12 million copies, making it one of the best-selling singles of all time.
The performance - alongside Mariah's rendition of O Holy Night - was being recorded for a televised show which airs on NBC in the US tonight. A whole host of other stars will appear on the programme - including Rod Stewart and CeeLo Green.
The Rockefeller Christmas tree is topped with a Swarovski crystal embellished star which consists of 25, 000 stones, weighing a huge 550lbs.

Mariah Carey rings in the holidays with new single
Pop diva Mariah Carey announced her next single for the holiday season on Monday. She will ring in the festive time of the year with the soulful "Christmas Time is in the Air Again". "Christmas Time is in the Air Again" is one of the songs from Carey's 2010 Merry Christmas II You album. It's a light ballad about falling in love during the holidays. Several minor embellishments like bells and chimes make track all the more festive as Mariah sings it smooth vocals. There is a definite warmth in her delivery.
Carey is promoting the song with a contest that allows fans to create their own Christmas cards for her. While "Christmas Time is in the Air Again" is beginning to warm up on iTunes, Mariah's hit, "All I Want for Christmas is You", shines bright atop the holiday songs chart.
When Christmas passes, Carey will serve as one of the new judges on American Idol's twelfth season in January.
