Hurricane ruins secret "X-factor" plans

Hurricane Irene is screwing with Simon Cowell's new show - TMZ has learned Mariah Carey had to cancel a "very important" video shoot for "X-factor" because she couldn't travel... and we're told it's thrown the show into "utter chaos". Sources connected to the show tell us Mariah is in New York and was supposed to fly to meet Simon at a secret location to begin taping a special segment for the show in the last few days.

Cowell has stated in the past that Mariah has an important role on the show - but he's not revealing any details. Sources tell us ... producers are trying to figure out another way to get the footage they need for the show... but so far, nothing is in the can.

Mariah Carey to have "international role" on US X Factor

Mariah Carey is jetting into the south of France today ahead of a meet with another well known diva - X Factor bigwig Simon Cowell. The Butterfly star, 41, has been offered an "international role" on the hit show, filming segments for both the UK and US versions, I can reveal.

The pair, who have been in talks for the past eight weeks, are meeting up at the five-star Hotel Martinez in Cannes tomorrow to finalise details. I'm told: "Simon has created a unique role just for Mariah after plans for her to be in the original US judging line-up fell through. Four months after having her babies, Mariah is ready to get back to business; she has lost so much weight for her small screen debut."

"The idea is for Mariah to assist Simon at the judges' houses stage of the US show, as well as helping the other judges. It has yet to be confirmed, but the other plan is for her to be given a special, one-off fifth judge role on the British show."

Mariah Carey is putting pressure on herself to not only drop the baby weight, but get back to the size she was 20 years ago! "She is getting it off. She is about to be 1990 again!" hubby Nick Cannon told OK! Magazine. The singer has already lost most of the weight she gained while pregnant with her twins - Moroccan and Monroe.

But the diva has been working out almost obsessively since she gave birth just four months ago. She's been also tweeting photos of herself and her weight loss. Cannon seems to be cheering her on, joking that she'll be in better shape than she was at the age of 21.

But is it too much, too fast? We are talking Mariah - the diva - here... but you can't help but ask yourself, shouldn't she take it easy? Cannon himself has been saying that it's been difficult balancing work with family life.

"It's the toughest thing in the world - leaving my family in general, not just my children, but my wife," he said. "Knowing that she is there with them being mommy, I don't want to miss any of those moments!"

"There is no 'worst' part at all. Everything is amazing about fatherhood," Nick explained to OK!. The best part is when they communicate with you and they recognize you. It's the best."

Mariah will be on X Factor!

It's official – Mariah Carey will appear on this fall's buzzy new talent competition, The X Factor, a source close to the show tells PEOPLE exclusively.

Carey won't be a judge, but rather a guest of a judge – in this case Simon Cowell, who hinted recently the diva was interested in joining the show.

"Mariah is definitely confirmed to be a part of X Factor," the source says. "She is confirmed to tape something with Simon Cowell at the judge's homes."

And Carey won't be the only celeb guest, the source adds.

"Each of the judges will tape something with mentors they have selected and Simon has selected Mariah to do that with him. The judge's mentor the talent they pick and she will be working with them," says the source.

Anderson Cooper comes clean about the Mariah affair

Take Anderson Cooper, add Piers Morgan, Twitter, and a rumour about Mariah Carey, and what you end up with is a moment of delirious pop-cultural lunacy. "OK, OK," Cooper said, when reminded of a recent on-air faux pas that was both playful and provocative.

"This is what happened," he said sheepishly. "I was doing a little thing on Mariah Carey being on the Home Shopping Network, and if you haven't seen it, you should. She was on for two hours, and it's worth the entire two hours. I was condemning HSN for not offering her her own full-time show, because she is genius television, she really is, and she deserves a nightly program to express that genius."

"So, in the course of that, I jokingly said I haven't really been following her lately, but that I knew she got married to somebody on America's Got Talent. I assumed it was Piers Morgan, and that if I was wrong, he'd correct me on Twitter, because he tweets every five minutes and it's been five minutes since his last tweet."

"Sure enough, there was a tweet five minutes later from Piers Morgan saying, 'I am not married to Mariah Carey, and I resent the implication.' And then he was like, 'I have a million Twitter followers, and I will soon surpass you.' And I was like, 'Ooo-kay.' So I repeated it. Once I got that tweet, I was like, 'I'm going to repeat this.' Piers Morgan is married to Mariah Carey, in case you haven't heard."

For the record, Carey is married to America's Got Talent host Nick Cannon. Tweet that, kids.

How Mariah Carey's dog is getting her in shape

Water aerobics is just one of the ways Mariah Carey is shedding those post-baby pounds this summer - and it looks like she's got a mini motivator in her dog Jill E. Beans. On Monday, the new mom Tweeted a photo of one of her five Jack Russell terriers doing the doggie paddle in a pool. "Sababa!" she wrote, which loosely translates to "cool" in Hebrew.

Last week, Carey enjoyed a sunny "ocean workout" which had her splashing in the waves. "It's been a loooong time since I've been in the ocean," she Tweeted. The mom of twins Moroccan and Monroe, who were born in April, has also been pounding the pavement with her four-legged fleet, which includes dogs Cha Cha, Jackie Lambchops, Squeak E. Beans and JJ.

If Jill E. Beans learns to ride a bike, the pooch could participate in a triathlon.

Pop music's biggest names join forces to help feed Africa

Don't be surprised to see an unusually earnest tweet from your favorite pop star in the next few days. A group of music's biggest names - including Beyonce, Madonna, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Shakira, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, U2, Mariah Carey and Coldplay - have joined forces to promote Save the Children's "I'm Gonna Be Your Friend" campaign. They hope to raise awareness of a famine sweeping East Africa by directing their Twitter and Facebook followers to download Kevin McDonald's film High Tide Or Low Tide, which has been bundled together with Bob Marley & The Wailers' similarly titled reggae classic.

"Not one child should be denied food nor water," said Bob Marley's widow, Rita Marley. "Not one child should suffer. Along with Save the Children, we must stand up together as friends to put a stop to this, to feed our children and to save their lives." You can download the short film and its soundtrack from iTunes for $1.29.

By enlisting the help of music's A List, the organization hopes High Tide Or Low Tide will be seen by 700 million people around the world.

Claim: new mom Mariah Carey headed for "breakdown"

"Motherhood is making Mariah Carey loopy!" reports the National Enquirer in a piece titled "Scary Carey". The mag says Carey's recent "bizarre" appearance on the Home Shopping Network "has some people thinking she could be headed for another breakdown".

In the segment, the new mom supposedly "spouted weird make-up words, spoke in a fake British accent, and claimed her pregnancy lasted 47 weeks - almost 11 months!" A so-called "insider" says, "Motherhood is taking a huge toll on Mariah," adding that the pressure of being a mom along with juggling her career "is driving her batty!"

No, it's actually not. Carey's spot on HSN was amusing and candid, and a rep for the singer explains, "She was having fun with her fans!" The rep tells Gossip Cop that Carey is doing great, and calls the Enquirer's story "completely made up".
