Ryan Seacrest to Mariah Carey: "You'll fit right in"

"I actually called her last night and I said, 'So welcome to the family'," the "Idol" host, who is assisting NBC with its Olympic coverage, told Today's Matt Lauer in London Thursday. "I said, 'What are you going to be like on the show?' She said, 'You know how I am: I'm very honest. I say what I'm thinking.' I said, 'Great. You'll fit right in.' "
Carey will be taking the seat of departed Jennifer Lopez, and Seacrest said, "We're sad to see her go." But the big question now is who will take over the chair once occupied so flamboyantly by Steven Tyler. I've heard rumors of Brad Paisley, I've heard rumors of Pink, I've heard rumors about all kinds of people. And the way that it works is we read about the rumors and about an hour before it's confirmed I get a call saying, 'Guess who's on the show.' "

Nick Cannon: Mariah Carey Will Be ‘The Toughest Judge’ On American Idol

Watch out Simon, Mimi is about to be unleashed!

According to Nick Cannon, his wife and new “American Idol” judge Mariah Carey will be the most fierce face to ever sit at the judges’ table – but even tougher than Simon Cowell?

“She’s very serious about music and singing. She’ll probably be the toughest judge that’s ever been on [the] show,” Nick told Access Hollywood backstage at Wednesday’s “America’s Got Talent.”

In addition to her strong opinions, Mariah will also show off another not-often-seen side.

“She’s going to be amazing… people don’t know my wife’s sense of humor,” Nick continued. “They’re about to get the whole Mariah Carey, raw and uncut! And see the woman that I fell in love with.”

But will she drop the diva behavior, for example showing up to work on time – as “Idol” is a live show for a majority of the season?

“Nah, that ain’t happening,” Nick joked. “It’s Mariah Carey time!”

“American Idol’s” Season 12 returns to FOX in January

Mariah Carey scene will open "The Butler"

Exclusive: Lee Daniels’s “The Butler” started shooting yesterday in New Orleans. And there’s a lot of news I can tell you EXCLUSIVELY about this film starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey. First of all, Quincy Jones has signed to compose the soundtrack. That’s a big big deal. And now I’ve heard that Daniels will film a scene for the opening of the film with Mariah Carey and Vanessa Redgrave far removed from the White House setting of the rest of the film. It sounds pretty cool, but I’ve been asked not to give it away.
Mariah is already said to be complaining about her makeup, which — as in “Precious”–she will be de-glamourized. And there’s more: because Liam Neeson is shooting Paul Haggis’s new film in Italy, he had to drop out of the role of Lyndon Johnson. So Liev Schreiber steps in. (The role of Lady Byrd is said to be minor.) And Olivia Washington, daughter of Denzel and Pauletta Washington, will make her screen debut as a civil rights activist. So far the only actress I’d like hear is in “The Butler” but isn’t is LaTanya Richardson. Lee–find her a role!
“The Butler” will be Daniels’ first PG-13 movie after more adult fare with “Monster’s Ball,” “Precious,” and “The Paperboy,” his wild new movie that opens this fall with an Oscar tipped performance by Nicole Kidman.

Mariah confirmed for American Idol!!!

PLATINUM-SELLING GLOBAL MEGASTAR MARIAH CAREY JOINS AMERICAN IDOL AS NEW JUDGE

Mariah Carey, one of the best-selling female recording artists of all time, has joined AMERICAN IDOL as a new judge. A five-time Grammy Award-winning global superstar with more than 200 million records sold worldwide and more No. 1 songs than any solo artist in history, her 18 Billboard No. 1 singles (17 of which Carey wrote) rival all but The Beatles. Carey joins the judges’ panel when AMERICAN IDOL returns in January 2013 on FOX.

“As a singer, songwriter and producer, it’s going to be fun and rewarding to help find new talent and give back with AMERICAN IDOL,” said Mariah Carey. “I’m currently in the studio working on my new album and its first single, ‘Triumphant,’ which will be out early next month. I can’t wait to channel my creative energy as a part of this show which is a massive global phenomenon.”

“We are proud to have one of the world’s greatest-ever female singers join our show,” said IDOL creator and executive producer Simon Fuller. “Mariah defines the word ‘Idol’ and will inspire every singer that has the honor of performing in front of her.”

“Mariah Carey is a global icon whose list of musical accomplishments is unprecedented,” said Cecile Frot-Coutaz, CEO, FremantleMedia. “Having sold more than 200 million records worldwide, she’s a true artist, ideally suited to identify and nurture AMERICAN IDOL’s next great music superstars. We warmly welcome her to the IDOL family.”

“Mariah Carey is the real deal. Not only is she one of the best-selling artists and performers on the planet and one of the world’s most gifted vocalists, she also is a successful songwriter, record producer and actress,” said Mike Darnell, President of Alternative Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. “She has a deep knowledge of music and a career insight that will make her a really amazing asset to our judges’ table and to our contestants.

It’s the dream of almost everyone who auditions for IDOL to sing like Mariah and we couldn’t be happier to have her be part of the show.”

With a distinct five-octave vocal range, prolific songwriting and producing talent, Carey has defined the modern pop performance. As a singer/songwriter/producer, she has been recognized with five Grammy Awards, nine American Music Awards, Billboard’s Artist of the Decade Award, the World Music Award for World’s Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium and BMI’s Icon Award, to name a few. She has two consecutive and unparalleled Billboard Song of the Decade titles: “One Sweet Day” (with Boyz II Men); and “We Belong Together,” further marking her massive presence on the charts since her 1990 song debut “Vision of Love.” Mariah became the second artist in history and the first female performer to have a song debut at No. 1 with “Fantasy” (1995), the groundbreaking collaboration with O.D.B. of the innovative rap group Wu-Tang Clan. Carey’s original holiday classic, “All I Want For Christmas is You,” redefined its place in pop culture as one of the greatest holiday hits of all time when it reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts in 2011, 17 years after its debut. Carey’s influential and stellar contribution to the music industry spans multiple genres and is showcased through a multifaceted hit catalogue as well as a long list of diverse collaborations.

Carey’s ongoing impact transcends the music industry and has left an indelible imprint upon the world at large. She recently made a substantial mark in film with her critically acclaimed role as a social worker in Precious, the 2009 film based on the novel Push, by Sapphire. A Congressional Award recipient, Carey has generously donated her time and energy to a range of domestic and international philanthropic causes near to her heart, including The Fresh Air Fund/Camp Mariah (a retreat where inner-city children explore career development), Save the Music Foundation and Make-a-Wish Foundation, among several others.

Carey is currently in the studio, writing, recording and executive-producing her next album for Island Def Jam Music Group, with the lead single, “Triumphant.”

AMERICAN IDOL has been the No. 1 entertainment program among Total Viewers for the past nine consecutive seasons. To date, IDOL alums have produced 349 No. 1 Billboard hits and garnered nearly 250 million iTunes downloads. Last year, Season 10 winner Scotty McCreery released his debut album, Clear As Day, which dominated the Billboard Country Albums chart and has gone platinum, selling more than one million copies. Season 11 winner Phillip Phillips’ first single, “Home,” which was released May 23, has been certified gold.

Mariah Carey linking up with Rick Ross, Meek Mill

Mariah Carey has announced a Maybach Music Group collaboration for her next single, "Triumphant". Mimi tweeted this weekend, "So I can finally announce to you that my new single is coming out early August. It's called Triumphant (Get 'Em) ft. Rick Ross and Meek Mill" and added, "I wrote Triumphant when I was going through a difficult time and it helped me get through it. When you hear it, pay attention to the lyrics."
This is the not the first time Mariah has worked with Rick Ross; the two collaborated on the "Touch My Body (Remix)" a few years back. Fans were mixed in reactions over the collaboration. "That's awesome" shared one while another laughed, "Meek Mill will be hitting more high notes than Mariah on her new single."
Mariah is in "serious talks" per People. This comes on the heels of news last week that Jennifer Lopez would be leaving the behemoth reality show. During a radio chat with Ryan Seacrest on July 13, who also hosts "Idol", she didn't play coy. Lopez, who kicks off a tour with Enrique Iglesias on Saturday, said she's been in tour mode since the "Idol" finale. "It's just been a really long, tough process," Lopez said. "Ryan, you know more than anybody, I've been telling the truth. I really have been torn. When I signed on to 'Idol', I signed on to do one year. I ended up doing two years because I just fell so in love with the show. You know that. I never felt so much part of a family of something working on it as I did with 'Idol'. I didn't know I'd be so moved emotionally. It was just such a lovely surprise in my life to do it. But even last year, when I had to make the decision to come back for a second season, it was super tough to decide. I have my movies and my music and my this and my that. It all kind of worked together for a while. But it gets complicated."
Steven Tyler announced his exit on Thursday (July 12). As to who will fill his seat, a number of names have been churning in the gossip mill, including "Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert, Nicki Minaj, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Fergie and will.i.am. Third judge Randy Jackson's fate on the show also remains uncertain but his musical collaborating history with Mariah may keep him for another go.

Mariah to receive BMI Icon Award for songwriting

Mariah Carey will be honored as a BMI Icon at the BMI Urban Awards, scheduled for Friday, September 7 at the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills. The star-studded event draws the entire entertainment community together to celebrate the songwriters, producers and publishers of the most-performed urban songs of the previous year.
BMI Icons are selected because of their "unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers". As the 2012 honoree, Mariah Carey will join ranks that include The Jacksons, Snoop Dogg, George Clinton, James Brown, Isaac Hayes, Little Richard, Al Green, The Bee Gees, Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton, to name a few.
Mariah Carey is one of the most prolifically successful songwriters of the last several decades in any genre of music. With her distinct five-octave vocal range and the finesse with which she scaled it, Carey defined the modern pop performance, delivering the songs she wrote with awe-inspiring grace and power.
Beginning with her career-launching eponymous debut album in 1990, Carey has co-written all of the songs that made her a superstar (with the exception of her stellar version of The Jackson 5's "I'll Be There" and Harry Nilsson's "Without You"), including 30 BMI Urban and Pop Award-winning hits such as "Always Be My Baby", "Hero", "Fantasy", "Vision of Love", "Emotions", "Shake It Off", "We Belong Together", "One Sweet Day", "I Don't Wanna Cry", "Dreamlover" and the timeless holiday classic "All I Want for Christmas is You".
An impressive 17 of her songs have amassed more than one million performances each, including "Always Be My Baby", "Dreamlover" and "Hero", which have each earned more than three million performances. The multi-Grammy winner has scored more No. 1 singles than any other solo artist in history - she is second in the all-genre, all-performer record books only to the Beatles - and has sold more than 200 million albums, singles and videos around the world on her way to becoming the top-selling female artist of all time. Carey also holds the record for the female songwriter with the most Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles, totaling 17.
Carey became the first female artist ever to receive the Chopard Diamond World Music Award, presented to artists who sell more than 175 million albums. She has made a substantial mark in other creative outlets as well, such as film, most notably as the social worker in Precious, the 2009 movie adaptation of the 1996 novel Push by Sapphire.
Also a dedicated humanitarian, Carey works with a number of charities, including Camp Mariah - The Fresh Air Fund, the Save the Music Foundation, Make-a-Wish Foundation, World Hunger Relief, and the Elton John Aids Foundation, among many others. Carey released The Essential Mariah Carey on May 8 of this year and is currently in the studio, writing and recording her next album for Island Def Jam Music Group.
The BMI Urban Awards will include an all-star musical tribute to Mariah Carey, as well as the presentation of the Urban Songwriter, Song, Producer and Publisher of the Year crystals. BMI President & CEO Del Bryant will share the evening's hosting duties with Catherine Brewton, Vice President, Writer/Publisher Relations, Atlanta. For more information on the BMI Urban Awards and other BMI Urban events, visit www.bmi.com.

New single titled "Triumphant" to mark "Idol" deal

Exclusive: Well, I wrote this more than a week ago, but I'll tell you again. Randy Jackson, the original "American Idol" judge, manages Mariah Carey. He's also producing her new album. On Tuesday this past week, Randy flew out to the Hamptons by helicopter from New York to see Mariah for a couple of hours. He was in the city promoting his new line of watches for HSN, which debuted last night.
Randy is bringing Mariah to "Idol" to join him as a judge. It's the perfect situation. They can finish their album, and Mariah can settle in for a couple of years, hopefully, as her twins are in their formative years. "Idol" will keep her close to home. Plus, when said album is released, it will give her an automatic platform from which to launch and promote it.
Now here's the newest news: The first single from the album, I am told, is a song called "Triumphant". When all the "Idol" contracts are signed, and the deal is finalized, both Randy and Mariah will be exactly that - triumphant. And "American Idol" will be a fun show to watch again. Unlike Jennifer Lopez, Mariah can sing, sing, sing. No doubt we'll hear a lot of warbling from the judges' table.
Now we'll have two members of the same family on competing reality-singing shows because Nick Cannon, Mariah's hubby, host "America's Got Talent". The Carey-Cannons have talent, too!

NICK CANNON 'American Idol' Can't Afford Mariah Carey!

If "American Idol" wants Mariah Carey to be one of their new judges, they are going to have to break the bank ... this according to Mr. Carey himself, Nick Cannon.

Mariah is one of the big names that has surfaced since Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler announced they were not coming back to "Idol" next season.

Cannon told our photog yesterday that it's going to take a HUGE payday to get Mimi to fill Lopez's vacant seat. He told us, "I don't know if they can afford Mariah Carey. That's a lot of money. If they gave JLo $20 million, they might have to double that!"

Money seems to be an ongoing theme when it comes to divas and singing shows. As TMZ previously reported, Britney Spears based her "X Factor" salary on what JLo made on "Idol" (which we hear is less than the $20 mil Cannon seems to think).

Latest "Idol" judge buzz

New American Idol judge names have been thrown out all week and now, in the wake of Steven Tyler's exit news, here's another one: Mariah Carey. As USA Today's Gary Levin reports, the return of Randy Jackson is uncertain. And Jennifer Lopez sounds like she's leaning toward leaving.
Us Weekly reports that Mariah Carey is "in serious talks" for a judge's seat. Along with Fergie and Adam Lambert (who said earlier this week he hasn't had a conversation with anyone about it). But Jerry Lewis, who was mentioned on Nigel Lythgoe's wish list with Charlie Sheen, is definitely in the mix. Lewis spokeswoman Candi Cazau reports that a package describing the requirements for judging the show has been sent to Lewis' office in Las Vegas, reports the Las Vegas Sun.
Meanwhile, Ryan Seacrest was busy in Chicago yesterday, presiding over first-round auditions.

Mariah Carey thrilled with new tunes

Mariah Carey is confident her new music is going to be a hit. The singer has been tweeting about her sessions in the studio with producer Rodney Jerkins, also known as Darkchild in the industry. The musician has worked with the likes of Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Beyoncé Knowles and Mariah was understandably excited to be teaming up with the Grammy-winning songwriter.
"In the studio with RJ - yeaah, having a nice time," she wrote on her Twitter profile. "Tonight was a stone winner with the massively talented Rodney Jerkins." The new album will be Mariah's first record in two years.
The mother-of-two took some time out after giving birth to her twins Moroccan and Monroe in April 2011 and has slowly been returning to her craft with a number of shows. The award-winning R&B star seems confident that her next record will be a success, as she tweeted a picture of herself and Rodney posing with a keyboard in the studio.

Mariah and Nick selling $5.5m Bahamas island home

Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey are leaving their island paradise. The host of America's Got Talent, 31, and his "Fantasy" diva wife, 42, have put their stunning beach home in the Bahamas on the market for a whopping $5.5 million, Celebuzz has confirmed.
The 4,000 square foot property named "Sea Lily" is nestled on Windermere Island and boasts three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a swimming pool at the front of the villa looks directly to the ocean. "Windermere is a private island, popular with a handful of well known owners who have their homes here," the property listing. "They fly in by helicopter or private jet and enjoy the privacy and seclusion of this tropical island."
What else does the home have? "Sea Lily is right on the ocean front and has superb views from every room of the house," the listing boasts. "It is just a few steps from the villa to the beach in front."
The villa has four separate buildings and two garages, while the guest rooms are in located in an additional building adjacent to the main living area. Each has a marble bathroom and wet bar. "This home is ideal as a retreat from a stressful lifestyle - where you can relax and get away from everything," the realtor says.
Carey and Cannon, who married in 2008, are currently renting a home near North Haven, N.Y. for $125,000 a month.

Curse of the Vera Wang wedding gown?

Vera Wang, the wedding dress designer synonymous with romance, announced yesterday she is separating from her husband, Arthur Becker, after nearly 23 years of marriage. But apparently, the designer's own brush with divorce also extends to some high-profile Hollywood clients who have all walked down the aisle in one of her covetable dresses.
From Mariah Carey to Heidi Klum and Jessica Simpson, a number of stars have entrusted the renowned designer with their special day, but it seems their marriages did not fit as well as their fanciful gowns. While there are many Vera Wang-wearing brides still married, such as Khloe Kardashian, who married Lamar Odom in 2009 in one of her designs, as well as Victoria Beckham, Ivanka Trump and Chelsea Clinton who all wore Vera Wang and are still living in wedded bliss, many more have split.
Mariah Carey married Tommy Mottola on June 5, 1993 in a Vera Wang sweetheart gown with a 27-foot train, however they parted ways four years later. Jessica Simpson wore a Vera Wang gown for her wedding to Nick Lachey in 2002, but the Newlyweds stars broke up in 2005. That same year Sophia Bush married her "One Tree Hill" costar Chad Michael Murray in Santa Monica, California in April 2005, and they split in September 2005.
Jennifer Lopez walked down the aisle in Vera Wang for her wedding to Marc Anthony in 2004, who she divorced in 2011, meanwhile Avril Lavigne wed Sum 41's Deryck Whibley in a strapless organza gown in Montecito, California on July 15, 2006, and dumped him three years later.
Elin Nordegren, who married Tiger Woods in October 2004, by the 19th hole of the Sandy Lane resort in Barbados, filed for divorce in 2010, and Kim Kardashian wed Kris Humphries in August 2011 wearing a custom made Vera Wang gown, but just 72 days later, the couple split. And though not pictured on her wedding day with Seal, Heidi Klum wore an ivory gown by Vera Wang which featured Chantilly lace and an empire waist. Earlier this year, the pair divorced.
Ms Wang's own separation comes just two weeks before her 23rd wedding anniversary; the now 63-year-old designer was 39 when she wed Mr Becker, a computer executive who has become increasingly involved with the Vera Wang brand over the years.
The president of Ms Wang's company, Mario Grauso, said in a statement, "Vera Wang and Arthur Becker have mutually and amicably agreed to separate. They remain devoted parents to their two daughters." According to WWD, Mr Becker has advised Ms Wang closely as her business developed from an Upper East Side one-stop bridal shop into a global multimillion-dollar brand, becoming more involved with the day-to-day operations of the business in recent years.
The couple married at the Hotel Pierre in 1989 after becoming informally engaged in 1988 during a trip to Hawaii, and have two daughters, Cecilia and Josephine. At the time of their marriage, Ms Wang, also a former Vogue editor, was design director for Ralph Lauren women's accessories and at-home wear.
In 2006, Ms Wang described her marriage as a surprise to New York magazine. She said: "I was the girl who nobody thought would ever get married. I was going to be a fashion nun the rest of my life. There are generations of them, those fashion nuns, living, eating, breathing clothes. But Ralph Lauren said, 'Get yourself a husband and a family.' Anna Wintour said, 'You have got to get a family going here. You've been single for three decades now.' So I married my husband. There are days I'm not happy I did it, but there are days I'm thrilled - I mean, he has always understood my nature, which is that it's always about product."
When it comes to her own wedding dress, she scoured department stores and bridal boutiques but only found a "sameness to everything". Eventually Ms Wang gave up and hired a dressmaker to create her own gown, for $10,000. In 1990, she opened her own design salon in the Carlyle Hotel in New York, featuring her now trademark bridal gowns with financial backing from her father. The Vera Wang label quickly took off, earning praise from the fashion elite for its luxurious fabrics, exquisite detailing and modern interpretation of classic lines.

The Anticipation Of Mimi!

Mariah Carey, Kanye West talk Michael Jackson on Spike Lee's ‘Bad’ documentary

Mariah Carey, Martin Scorsese and Kanye West are dishing on the King of Pop for the upcoming Spike Lee project celebrating the 25th anniversary of the album Bad. The latest in a tribute to the late entertainer, Spike Lee dished on his upcoming project on Tuesday. It is in the final post production phase and getting the interest of fans worldwide as everyone wants to know before the release in August.

The anniversary project includes a focus on the story behind the Bad album. Placing emphasis on the world tour and Michael Jackson’s videos to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the record. Getting a chance to explore the culture behind the success, Spike Lee has said to interview over forty people who know firsthand about the success. The release of the epic album was in August 1987 and his music swept the world.
Michael Jackson died from acute Propofol intoxication in June 2009. One of the greatest entertainers, the fans still finds his music a work of art. Celebrating the Bad album is just another example of how the entertainer is dearly missed. The Spike Lee documentary has yet to have an official name, but by release time in August the title should be announced.

Book excerpt: BeBe Winans, "The Whitney I knew"

When Mariah debuted, I'm sure people in the media couldn't wait to compare her to Whitney. I had heard of Mariah early on because my good friend, Rhett Lawrence, produced her first big single. I was at his house in California when he was raving about this new singer.
Well, as we all know, when Mariah came on the scene, she hit hard. And instantly the media created a "hate" between Whitney and Mariah. They were both going to be at the American Music Awards, and people were expecting some kind of fireworks because supposedly there was this massive tension between them. Again, this was a fabrication. They didn't hate each other; they didn't even know each other.
I could convince Whitney to do anything - pranks or whatever. We'd be hanging out and I'd tell her to do something, and she'd say, "You are not my father. Why do you think you're my father? You think I'll just do whatever you tell me?" To which I'd reply, "Shut up, I am your father" - all in good fun, of course.
Well, we were at the American Music Awards, and I had persuaded Whitney that after her performance and her category were over, we would go to dinner. I'd also informed her that when we exited our seats, she would be the last one out, and that we were going to pass Mariah Carey on the way out.
"Here's what you do," I said. "You gonna stop and you gonna put out your hand and you gonna speak to her." "I'm not gonna speak to her," Whitney replied. "Yes, you are. You're going to be bigger than this whole situation." "I'm not..." "Yes, you are."
Her category finished and our little foursome started marching out to go to dinner - CeCe in front of me, Whitney's assistant, Robin, in front of her, and Whitney at the end of the line - just like I said. And Whitney did exactly as I told her to do. I didn't stop to listen to or watch their interaction; I just kept moving. The three of us piled into the car, and then Whitney blew in like a storm and slammed the door behind her. She was clearly upset and embarrassed.
"I'm going to kick your tail!" she said to me. "What happened?" "I'll never listen to you again." "Tell me what happened!" "I did everything you said: I stopped. I put out my hand and said, 'Hi Mariah, I'm Whitney.' And when I stuck out my hand, she turned her head like she didn't hear anything I said and looked up at the sky."
"Oh no," I said. "Tell me that's not true." "Oh, it's true. I was so embarrassed. There I stood, looking like an idiot. I'm never going to do what you tell me to do again." Thank God the media didn't see this. If they had, Whitney's and Mariah's brief exchange (or lack of it) would have been blown into epic proportions. They would have hated each other and not even known why - and all because it may have been so chaotic in that moment that Mariah didn't even hear Whitney. Unbelievable. Well, my idea didn't go very well, but we laughed at that whole awkward affair years later. And this incident didn't end up stopping those two from getting together in the future... after some further persuasion. When Whitney was approached with the opportunity to record a duet with Mariah, I encouraged her to do it. She wouldn't hear of it. "You're crazy," she responded. "You know what happened last time I tried to do something nice. You don't know what you're saying, boy. You've lost your mind."
It wasn't that she disliked Mariah; she just didn't want to be embarrassed again. We talked a little more about it, but she finally said, "That ain't going to happen, BeBe." Then, only a few months later, she called me and sheepishly informed me of her latest news.
"Well," she began, dragging it out a bit, "you said it a few months ago - that I should do a duet with Mariah." "No," I interrupted, "don't tell me you're doing it!" "Yeah, Babyface wrote the song, and it's on." I could tell she was very happy about the whole thing.
"Wow," I replied, "ain't that something! That's going to be incredible! But wait, you said you were never going to do something like that." We both laughed and laughed. Oh, how Whitney loved to laugh. Finally the two superstars met - two musical powerhouses who knew who they were outside of the pop world. And when they performed that Oscar-winning song together ("When You Believe" from the Prince of Egypt soundtrack), it was the catalyst for a great friendship between them. When I looked at Mariah at Whitney's funeral, all those memories came flooding back.
I share that story for two reasons. First, as an example of the gross exaggerations the media likes to spin on celebrities and also to communicate Whitney's honest love for her peers. She loved other singers and was always up on who was new and fresh. Second, I wanted to depict the scene within the church the day of her funeral. Each person sitting in that sanctuary represented both the good and the bad of Whitney's life.
When I say good and bad, I simply mean the wonderful make-up of this life in general. That's what makes life so beautiful: the fun and the boring, the misunderstandings and the epiphanies. All of it mixes together on the canvas of our lives. When I saw Mariah at Whitney's homegoing, I saw a specific brushstroke of Whitney's life. That brushstroke touched other brushstrokes. Together the strokes formed a masterpiece.
All masterpieces have certain tensions or contrasts on display - that's what makes the painting dynamic and memorable. Whitney's life told a dramatic story filled with contrast and beauty, a life truly lived. The seclusion of fame damages people the most. Fame causes its inhabitants to live afraid - to fear their reputation being marred - which makes seclusion seem the only real alternative. Look at how Michael Jackson faded into eerie reclusiveness, buying a monkey and other exotic animals as pets. For me, that seems far removed from reality and true human connection. But he also endured a level of celebrity that few people on earth can relate to.
One year Whitney threw an exclusive party - a BIG party. You may ask, who throws a party for their 26th birthday - complete with a who's who of attendees, loads of food, a beautifully decorated tent, and excellent music? Well, she did, because she was on the road during her 25th birthday.
The invitation had a spectacular picture of Whitney on the cover. You had to be on a list, and there were different security checkpoints. CeCe and I just stayed on the sidelines of the party, watching her enjoy the evening and all the love as she mingled with everyone.
That was also the night we discovered that Michael Jackson had given Whitney a monkey as her birthday present. Everyone seemed amused, but I'm sure they were all thinking the same thing I was - This is crazy! Who gives monkeys to people for their birthdays?
The thought is funny and ridiculous at the same time. Of course Whitney didn't need a monkey! It was all she could do to take care of her cat! But perhaps Michael was so far removed from people that he thought Whitney could use the companionship of a monkey.
Whitney couldn't believe it. She read Michael's card, looked at me, and said, "What am I going to do with a monkey?" We both laughed. "As soon as this party's over, that monkey is getting dropped off at the zoo!" Did this gift make sense to Michael? I don't know. Perhaps. The amount of fame that Whitney had garnered already as a 26-year-old had propelled her into a lonely way of life. But can you imagine thinking that another person would be so lonely that they'd need a pet monkey? This was someone's reality?
This is what seclusion does to a person. Whitney didn't struggle with the inclination toward extreme reclusivenes like Michael did, though I can see now how that gift from Michael was a foreshadowing of darker days ahead for Whitney.

Carey and Cannon get their Hamptons on

International mega-star Mariah Carey owns (at least) three multi-million dollar residences - in Los Angeles, the Bahamas and The Big Apple - but she's a long-time renter in the Hamptons, that traffic-choked but none-the-less drooled over sliver of sand at the far eastern end of New York's Long Island where the rich, the famous and those that hang with (and on to) the rich and famous flock in droves each summer to see and be seen on the casually dressed but relentlessly paced summertime social scene.
Miz Carey - whose admittedly impressive vocal acrobatics are completely lost on Your Mama - is blessed with bank accounts that seem to know no limits when it comes to livin' life high on the real estate hog. In summer 2008 Madame Butterfly (allegedly and reportedly) shelled out $125,000 for a one week stay at Stone Meadow Farm, a land-locked, 8-acre spread in East Hampton that offered the high-maintenance lady an 18,000 square foot main mansion with 10 bedrooms and 12.5 bathrooms plus two additional cottages to house her retinue of weave mistresses, toenail clippers, purse toters and angry-looking body guards.
The summer before that Mimi & Co. reportedly dropped around $350,000 to shack up for a month in retail clothing tycoon Tommy Hilfiger's 5 bedroom and 5.5 bathroom ocean front residence on East Hampton's much-coveted, astronomically expensive, and celebrity-lined Further Lane. Mister Hilfiger has since sold the property.
Some rather clever sleuthing by an informant we call Chatty Charlie indicates (but does not exactly prove) the multi-platinum Grammy winner, her variety show host husband Nick Cannon and their 1 year old twins have settled this summer into The Peninsula, a private, 1.9-acre bay front estate with 650-feet of water frontage in the wooded North Haven area of the Hamptons near Sag Harbor.
The length and financial terms of their (alleged) Hamptons rental are unknown - at least to Your Mama - but listing information we juiced up out of the interweb reveals the swank spread was last listed for lease at $125,000 for just the month of July and $150,000 for the month of August (through Labor Day).
Remote-controlled gates open to a driveway that splits and s-curves up the front of the approximately 7,500 square foot cedar shingled mansion and swoops around to and attached, side entry 3-car garage luxuriously equipped with radiant heated floors. We don't know it to be but would any of the children be at all surprised to learn the garage was also air conditioned? No, of course not.
A double-height foyer and circular vestibule lead to the main living/ entertaining areas that include a "formal" living room with French doors that allow for a sweeping view over the backyard, through the trees, and over the bay towards Shelter Island; a formal dining room (with big ol' butler's pantry); a den with built-in bookshelves, entertainment center, fireplace and more French doors; and a colossal, center island eat-in kitchen finished with miles of Shaker-style cabinetry (some with glass doors), acres of thick slab marble counter tops and the full complement of top-grade, commercial-style appliances. A shallow archway connects the family- and chef-friendly kitchen and breakfast area to a somewhat compact, window-lined family room with fireplace and even more French doors that open to the backyard.
There are 5 family/guest bedrooms, one on the main floor and four on the second. Each family/guest bedroom has a private pooper and two second floor suites have French doors that lead to private, water side terraces. The extensive, second floor master suite encompasses an entry vestibule, large bedroom with private water side terrace, separate, essentially octagonal sitting room with fireplace, and a walk-in closet the size of a small bedroom plus a separate dressing room. The attached bathroom is slathered in marble and mirrors and features dual sinks, giant jetted bathtub with water view, a cubby for the crappy (and bidet) and a separate multi-head (steam) shower.
The finished basement, according to one listing we perused, is outfitted with a movie theater, a wine cellar and - natch - staff quarters. The back of the house opens to a Balinese resort-style complex with a massive, 60' x 30' negative edge swimming pool and party-sized spa flanked by a pair sunbathing decks that appear to float on the shimmering surface of the water. Photos tweeted (and captioned) by Mister Cannon show a very dĂ©classĂ© chain link fence was installed around the swimming pool and spa, presumably to keep the Carey-Cannon twins from crawling across the yard and falling into the water.
Although The Peninsula estate is just about entirely surrounded by water, there isn't any actual beach, at least not one that's easily accessible. There is, we note in aerial images available online, a gorgeous and secluded sandbar where (we imagine) nude sunbathing would hardly be noticed by anyone but only the most intrepid beach seekers would bother to tramp through the marshy woods that surround the landscaped areas immediately around the house, swim or boat across a slender creek, and traverse a scrubby dune to get there.
Should Mister and Missus Carey decide they really dig it, The Peninsula property is currently for sale with an asking price of $14,995,000, reduced from $16,900,000. Property records show The Peninsula is owned by a New York City-based real estate investor who also owns a trio of contiguous apartments in an architecturally festooned but dour, 35-foot wide townhouse supremely situated on East 78th Street just off Fifth Avenue and designed in 1900 by renowned high society architect C.P.H. Gilbert. The three third floor units were on the market until late May (2012) with an asking price of $8,750,000, reduced from its original $8,900,000 price tag.
Anyhoo, as mention at the outset, Miz Carey and Mister Cannon maintain (at least) three multi-million dollar residences: A fortified, hilltop mansion above Bel Air in Los Angeles, CA formerly owned by Farrah Fawcett and bought in 2009 for around $7,000,000; a titanic triplex penthouse in New York City's TriBeCa nabe opulently done up by Mario Buatta, a man who never met a chintz that didn't make him sweat with decorative desire; and an ocean front compound in the Bahamas scooped up sometime in 2008 for somewhere near $5,000,000.

Mariah photobombs Nick's July 4th photo with a finger

Mariah Carey fans know the artist loves butterflies. The cute creatures are on her CD covers, her jewelry and she even talks about them. So when Nick Cannon tweeted out a Fourth of July picture on Wednesday, Mariah Carey had to be real close as there was a finger with a butterfly in the foreground of the photograph.
"4th of July Hamptons swag," tweeted Nick Cannon with a link to the photo from his official Twitter account on Wednesday. The photograph showed Nick Cannon wearing a patriotic hat and taking time off with the family in the Hamptons. Also in the photo is one finger that is nicely painted placed on his chest wearing a butterfly ring. It's about as much as anyone got to see of Mariah Carey for the Fourth of July, but the fans knew this was the star as she always wears her lucky butterfly rings.
It's obvious this photobomb wasn't intentional, but this photo of Mariah Carey's finger definitely is funny. Stealing the moment away from Nick Cannon, all it took was Mariah Carey's finger and everyone is all interested in her ring and what color of nail polish she is wearing.

Mariah Carey talks Whitney Houston tribute on BET Awards: ‘An emotional moment’

The tribute to Whitney Houston during the BET Awards on Sunday night was like no other. Promising that fans would shed a few tears, the moment the entertainers came together to share their love for the late entertainer was the best of any tribute done. While some were moved by the choice of music, the entertainers who graced the stage were also relevant. Mariah Carey, Brandy Norwood and Monica were amazing to hear during the segment. After the performance, Mariah Carey addressed her fans about the chance to sing.

“Just got off stage at BET Awards, had an emotional moment paying tribute to my incredible friend Whitney Houston, RIP,” tweeted Mariah Carey from her official Twitter account. The entertainer has over seven million followers and no doubt many were watching.

Sharing the music and memory of the late entertainer, this tribute will be talked about for a long time to come. Instead of using American Idol contestants, BET Awards found real artists who could sing instead of emulate and bring passion to the stage that only years of experience could show. Getting the Houston family approval was like icing on the cake as it made the fans appreciate the moment even more.

Trench Warfare: Victoria Beckham vs. Mariah Carey

It's Posh versus Mimi. Beige versus red. Classy versus crazy.

They're both divas and we can't confirm if there are actual souls hidden under those trench coats, but let's do this thing!

Trench warfare has officially been declared, starting with team Victoria Beckham as she breezed through LAX airport on Sunday in this avant-garde trench with cape sleeve detail…

If you're guessing that this is a Beckham design we wouldn't blame you, but you'd also be wrong! It's from Junya Watanabe Comme des Garçons and was paired with black Giuseppe Zanotti booties and VB shades—well, she did have to have something from her own collection, right?!

Mrs. David Beckham's call to war is met and doubled with Mariah Carey's dog whistle high note! Our fave lamb wore a YSL double-breasted trench out in London the very next day. The scarlet asymmetrical design was cinched at the waist with a matching tie and worn over a LBD with platform Louboutins.

Both of these hot momma's have their trench coat guns poised and ready to open fire, but your vote decides who will be forced to surrender! Tell us who you'd follow into battle below.
